The web community is great in the sense that you can get in touch with your collegues. Blogging is a very useful tool and a great way to promote yourself and or your services.

Search engines such as Google Yahoo and MSN just love content and the blogsphere is pure content. www.blogger.com ,www.typepad.com and http://wordpress.org/ are great free tools.
You can also use http://www.typepad.com/ or http://home.blogware.com/ for a fee.
